Gilbert Barr, Jr.
was born February 28, 1958 in the rural North
Florida town of Perry. He graduated high school
in 1976 where he was an accomplished high school
basketball player, along with being active in
other informal sporting activities. He attended
North Florida Junior College and received his
Associates of Arts degree in 1978 then completed
the Computer Science program at Lively Technical
Center, located in Tallahassee, Florida in 1981.
In October 1985, after working in the computer
operations field since 1981, he moved to
Detroit, Michigan to work for Electronic Data
Systems (EDS) supporting a national health care
claims system in a variety of positions, from a
technical, financial and business analyst
perspective. He worked supporting the health
care claims system, underwritten by Blue Cross
Blue Shield of Michigan, until the year 2000,
for a total of over 14 years. This working
experience gives him the firsthand knowledge of
how the insurance industry conducts business and
how the health care claims system actually
works, as he was responsible for ensuring the
data center met required standards along with
ensuring the quality and mailing of all
financial reports and specific claims processed
correctly, for the majority of his time spent in
this corporate environment. |

In 1986
Gilbert started to experience unexplained health changes
that continued until 1991 when he was officially diagnosed
with the autoimmune disease sarcoidosis in his lungs,
liver, lymph nodes and pituitary gland. As a result of
being diagnosed with sarcoidosis, Gilbert has developed
many permanent secondary chronic health conditions and his
life continues to change as time goes on. He has
experienced over the years at least one health situation
that most people can relate back to in their own lives.
Because of the experiences he has endured firsthand, from
his journey with sarcoidosis and the experiences he has
encountered with support outlets such as the medical
profession, employers and loved ones, he can express these
experiences as only someone who has lived them can,
honestly and from the heart. These experiences also give
him a personal knowledge of how to get the most from your
insurance policies and the benefits you are entitled to,
especially when you add this knowledge to the business
knowledge he already obtained from supporting a national
health care claims system for over 14 years from a
professional aspect. There is no doubt Gilbert has the
personal experience, knowledge and credibility to write
about these subjects by way of his two books. Who else is
more qualified than someone who has “lived” the
experiences?
