From November 2000
through April 2002, Gilbert wrote his
autobiography by way of his first book entitled
“ME & SARCOIDOSIS – A LIFETIME PARTNERSHIP”.
Since this was his first book and a subject in
which he had great personal interest, he took on
the project solo, as he handled all aspects of
the project personally. As his main objective
was to bring awareness to sarcoidosis and his
story, this was extremely important to him, as
he wanted no outside influence in regard to his
story. In April 2002 the book was published via
iUniverse Inc.
After the release of his first book, Gilbert has
spent time traveling around the country and
speaking at various sarcoidosis events. Some of
these events included the Sarcoidosis Awareness
Day in August 2002 at the Mount Sinai Medical
Center in New York City, the 11th Annual
Sarcoidosis Awareness and Education Conference
in March 2003 sponsored by the Sarcoidosis
Network Foundation in Cerritos, California and
back in his hometown of Detroit, Michigan, he
spoke at the Michigan Sarcoidosis Awareness Day
Conference in October 2002; to just name a few.
In addition, he has been featured on television
newscasts and given both live television and
radio interviews to promote sarcoidosis
awareness. Along with the speaking engagements,
television and radio appearances, Gilbert has
given interviews and written articles for
various sarcoidosis and other health related
organizations, such as the Diabetes Insipidus
Foundation’s newsletter, as an example. He has
provided his story not only in this country but
in other parts of the world as well, such as for
the Sarcoidosis And Interstitial Lung
Association based in London, United Kingdom. In
addition, he has been involved with several
non-profit sarcoidosis organizations across the
country to help promote sarcoidosis awareness
and patient support by being involved in patient
support activities, writing letters to various
elected officials to stress the importance of
sarcoidosis legislation, provided suggestions
for House Resolutions, and by providing advice
regarding various sarcoidosis patient topics. He
is also a member of the SarcoidBuddies online
support group and the Diabetes Insipidus
Foundation, Inc.
Gilbert’s experience with these organizations,
communications with patients from all over the
world, by way of the many e-mails he receives
from patients and caregivers alike, along with
face to face conversations with other patients
and medical professionals, gives him personal
experience that in turn inspired him to write
his second book starting in 2003 and completing
the final touches in May 2004, entitled “LIVING
WITH SARCOIDOSIS & OTHER CHRONIC HEALTH
CONDITIONS”. All aspects of the book were again
overseen by Gilbert and published via iUniverse
Inc. Everything Gilbert writes about in this
book, he has personally experienced or has been
told directly by way of approved interviews with
the actual patients. When it comes down to
it...there is no better experience than what you
have experienced personally.
